Residents who opposed plans for a petrol station in a South Ruislip supermarket carpark have been told that it will be ready on June 9.

The carpark at the Sainsburys store in Victoria Road will be reduced by 40 spaces to make room for the filling station, which will include a convenience store and be open from early morning to late at night.

Councillors gave the plans the green light in October on condition that measures were introduced to manage the traffic at the junction of Victoria Road and Long Lane, because of residents' concerns about congestion.

'The roads are already completely full of traffic at the junction and we think having a petrol station there will make matters worse,' said Don Ticehurst, chairman of South Ruislip Residents Association.

A spokesman for the council said changes were being planned to the timing of the traffic lights at the junction to ease traffic flow.

The filling station is part of a new extended store, which will open on July 4, after a week of closure for refurbishment starting at 8pm on June 26.

A new salad bar, meat, fish and delicatessen counters, self-service bakery and customer information desk will be added, duty manager Alan Curtis told the South Ruislip Residents' Association on Wednesday last week.

The filling station will be open from 6am until 10.30pm Monday to Thursday and Saturday, from 6am until 12.30pm on Friday and from 8am until 8pm on Sunday.

The opening hours for the new store will remain the same.
