A NEW school council has been set up to give pupils more say in the running of their school.

The council elections were held yesterday at Holtspur County Combined School in Cherry Tree Road, near Beaconsfield, and most of the school's pupils flocked to the voting room to support their favourite candidate.

Adrian Broadway, headteacher at the school, said the new scheme was designed to help the pupils feel more part of the community.

He added: "The council will consist of two children from each class who will meet each fortnight to discuss concerns they have had expressed to them by classmates.

"This will encourage them to take an active part in school issues if there are worries or problems or ideas about different things. For example, some girls might have an issue with boys playing too much football in the playground."

The scheme is a part of a county-wide initiative called the Bucks Healthy Schools Standard, which is working towards providing a healthy atmosphere in schools.
