l A mosaic project completed by unemployed youngsters in Thamesmead aimed to beautify the environment while offering them a route back to work. The artists were paid a wage for the work and gained qualifications towards further and higher education. Over 25 metres of mosaic now decorate Binsey Walk following the scheme, which was organised by the Greenwich Mural Workshop. A spokesman for the GMW explained the aims of the exercise: “Our ambition is to help more young people into full employment and continue to use art to create beautiful and exciting environments.” The scheme was funded by Bexley Council, the Skillswork programme and Gallions Housing.
