THE ROAR of the crowd and the smell of the greasepaint lured more than 20 performers to show off their combined talents at a star-studded talent show in East Cowes on Saturday — and Simon Cowell was nowhere in sight.

Rector’s assistant at St James’s Church, East Cowes, Andrew Wright, rounded off a memorable evening dressed as Elvis Presley singing a spirited rendition of the King’s hit Can’t Help Falling in Love With You.

Other entertainment was provided by the Rev Jonathan Hall, who introduced the acts dressed as a jester, with other acts ranging from nine-year-old Christopher Goddard, who played his recorder, to 90-year-old Doris Osborne, who read the poem Blame The Vicar by Sir John Betjeman.

The show was put on by members of St James’s and St Mildred’s Church in Whippingham at St James’s Church Hall.

It is the sixth time the talent show has been held in the town and it raised around £250 for church funds.

Rev Hall said the combined churches were already planning next year’s event. He said: “It has become a firmly established tradition. There was real enjoyment, both for those who took part and for people who went to see it.”
