SURREY WOMEN'S CUP FINAL.

WIMBLEDON RES 1 - CROYDON 0.

Wimbledon Ladies Reserves overcame last season's cup-holders Croydon Ladies to lift the Surrey Women's Cup in a close, hard fought and sporting final at Leatherhead FC's ground last Sunday.

Wimbledon took the game to Croydon right from the start, with 15 year old Becky Stokes causing the Croydon defence many problems with her speed and persistence. Croydon were limited to only a handful of attacks in the first half.

They were kept at bay by Wimbledon's steady back line, led by the experienced Paula Annis, who was voted man-of-the-match after the final whistle,

Despite Wimbledon being on top for much of the first half, they did not create many clear cut chances and had to settle for 0-0 at half time.

The crucial breakthrough came after ten minutes when Kyla Price despatched a brilliant through ball from midfield into the path of substitute Sarah Standbury, who shrugged off the efforts of the Croydon defender and knocked the ball high into the net over the advancing goalkeeper.

Both sides battled hard and Croydon mounted a series of attacks in the closing minutes, coming very close on a couple of occasions. But it was Wimbledon's day, running out 1-0 winners at the end of an exciting 90 minutes.

Wimbledon's victory was a fitting finale too for manager Yestin Linton-Smith for whom this was his last match in charge after two and a half season with the club. He was given a rousing send off as guest of honour at the team's celebrations later in the day.
