TWELVE young unemployed people from Harlow are being given the chance to develop a career in community leadership under a newly-launched scheme.

The VOCAL (Volunteer Opportunities Community Action Leadership) scheme is funded by a grant from the European Social Fund.

Young people between the ages of 16 and 25, who are currently unemployed or in unsatisfying part-time work, can apply to take part in the 18 month long scheme, which was launched by Harlow Council and South East Economic Development Strategy.

They will receive training in community work, equivalent to an NVQ Level 2/3 and go on work placements in local voluntary organisations working mainly with children and young people.

Those who are unemployed when they join the scheme will continue to receive Jobseekers Allowance and benefits such as help with travel costs, childcare, and care of other dependants.

About a third of the way through the course, two trainees will be recruited in paid posts to set up a volunteer centre.

All the trainees will then recruit more unemployed people to work as volunteers.

Anyone interested should ring Jacqui Kings of Harlow Councils youth and community service on 446433.

The deadline for applications is May 15.
