Harlow 175-2

Upminster 172 a/o

(Essex League Division Two)

AN EMPHATIC victory over Upminster on Saturday maintained Harlow's position at the top of their division, but as the season reaches its final week Harlow's promotion hopes still hang in the balance.

After winning the toss and inviting the visitors to bat Harlow soon gained the initiative with Paul Mayhew (1-24) dismissing Mark Rath for a duck and then running out Paul Hogg for just two.

A half century stand between Lorne Sprigg (47) and Ian Adams (23) repaired the damage before the former was stumped by Terry Rist off the bowling of Niraj Odedra (2-48) and the latter was bowled by Simon Baulcomb (2-26).

Baulcomb struck again to remove Paul Brockman for a duck but David Odell (40) and Terry Wyatt (17) offered some stubborn resistance.

The introduction, however, of Ian Hills' spin claimed the last four wickets to leave Upminster all out on 172.

In reply, Harlow openers Nilesh Odedra (19) and Terry Rist (89n.o.) gave their side a solid start before the former was caught at mid-off attempting an ambitious drive with the score on 35.

Shaban Munir batted cautiously for his 25 but shared a stand of 65 with the in-form Rist.

After Munir's dismissal Ian Nuttall (40n/o) batted positively with excellent stroke play and, together with Rist, took Harlow to their target with eight wickets and six overs to spare.

After the game Harlow spokesman Terry Rist said: "Our bowlers did really well to contain such a strong batting side. Our batters simply finished off the job."

Harlow now take on Hutton in their final match of the season and must win to be certain of gaining promotion, which will also give them the title.

Looking forward to the encounter, Rist said: "We will have to be on top of our game in all departments if we are to overcome Hutton as they are a very good side. Its going to be tough but we remain confident".
