A HARD-fought 20-15 win over East Grinstead maintained Dartfordians 2nd XVs unbeaten run this season at Bourne Road on Saturday.

Every other side at the club, including the 1st XV, for the third successive week had their matches called off because of waterlogged pitches.

Leading by example, skipper Jerry Stevens helped set up the first try after he combined well with fly-half Bradley Jones to put winger Danny Wall over, and Jones kicked the conversion.

The visitors had to defend for long periods as Stevens, flankers Dave Acton and John Bucksey, and prop Toby Hambridge continuted to create holes in their defensive ranks.

Grinstead eventually conceded a penalty, which was quickly taken by scrum-half Mike Hartill, and No.8 Nick Byram powered his way over the try-line.

To their credit, East Grinstead hit back rallied strongly and they were duly rewarded with two unconverted tries.

The best try of the match came from left-winger Peter Montero who, after scooping up a loose ball in his own half, raced past six

defenders and squeezed over by the corner flag it seemed to have sealed victory.

And when Jones booted a penalty for the Dartfordians a win looked certain, but a late try for the visitors gave them some belated hope.

In the only other game of the weekend, Darts under-13s won away at Greenwich 37-15, with four tries from Michael Railton and a superb individual try from full-back Tom Collins.

This weekend, Dartfordians will, hopefully, return to league action with a home game against Heathfield & Waldron. Kick-off at Bourne Road, Bexley is at 2.15pm.

Dartfordians welcome players from under 7s to under 18s with RFU-qualified coaches taking every session.
