NEWHAM and Essex Beagles Athletic Club won their last McDonald's League fixture at Enfield last Sunday and six Harlow-based runners played their part in the victory.

Richard Mead took second place in the under-15 3000m with a time of 9min 56sec. In the under-17 version of the same event Ben Hellmers also came second with 9min 41sec.

Jimmy Andrews had a superb run in the under-15 800m, winning the 'B' with a personal best time of 2min 19sec. Another 'B' winner was under-17 steeplechaser James Waggitt (5min 30sec).

Sam Hellmers, 12, achieved the day's biggest improvement in terms of personal bests when he won the 1500m in 5min 32sec.

Club newcomer Carl Skelton had a terrific debut in the 100m, taking second place with a time of 12.6sec.

Elsewhere, Jackie Socas, 16, and Ravenna Brown, 17, played their part in the Beagles' girls team performance in the BAL Jubilee Cup Plate final at Bedford.

Socas secured fourth spot in the 800m with a season's best 2min 21sec while Brown was fifth in the 3000m.
