Seven Shaftesbury Barnet athletes, Larry Achicke, Anthony Whiteman, Natasha Danvers, Abi Oyepitan, Shani Anderson, Lee McConnell and Catherine Murphy, will be bidding for medals for Britain in the World Championships in Edmonton, Canada, next month.

A few more SBH members could be included when further selections are made on Monday to complete the team.

Oyepitan, who opted for the European U23 Championships in Amsterdam and gained a silver medal in the 100m, is the fastest British runner with 11.29secs.

The men's triple jump was a high quality affair, featuring three of the top six in the Sydney Olympics, champion Jonathan Edwards, Achike (fifth) and Phillips Idowu (sixth).

With the first two guaranteed a place in the world event, Achike showed the way with 16.99m, only to be overtaken by Edwards with 17.59m. Idowu improved to 16.88m, but the Shaftesbury star held on for a second spot, ensuring his slot in the team. He'll have his final jumps before Edmonton in the British Grand Prix at Crystal Palace on Sunday.

The selectors have been left with a headache in the javelin. British No1 Steve Backley was absent through injury, but he'll be going to Canada.

In blustery conditions, Shaftesbury's Nick Nieland (77.91m) looked assured of second place behind Mick Hill (79.98m). Then, with his final throw, Mark Roberson (80.80m) beat them both. Nieland and Hill have both achieved the qualifying standard of 82m, but Roberson hasn't.

Tony Whiteman ran a sound tactical race in the 1500m final to take second spot in 3mins 44.40secs, behind John Mayock, who gained his sixth AAA title.

Shaftesbury's Charlie Low also ran well when fourth in the 3,000m steeplechase in 8mins 40.85secs.

Other SBH men's finalists were Colin McMaster (fourth, high jump, 2.02m), Graham Holder (seventh, hammer, 60.93m) and Christian Linsky (eighth, pole vault 4.80m).

Shani Anderson was unlucky when beaten by inches in the 200m after a terrific duel with Sarah Reilly. The Birchfield runner returned 23.42secs, with Shani 100th of a second behind.

Shaftesbury's Julie Dunkley (shot putt, 16-31) and Lyn Sprules (hammer, 59.38m) were also second, but short of the qualifying standard.

There was disappointment for Shaftesbury's Catherine Murphy in the 400m. After leading all the way in her semi-final, in 52.28secs, she was badly drawn in lane six in the final. Needing a quick break to get clear of fast runners on her inside, she defaulted at the start.

In the re-run, Catherine was in with a chance of a medal with 120 metres to go but faded into fifth place in 53.50secs behind McConnell, third in 52.93secs.

Jo Fenn, who lives in Barnet and runs for Woodford and Essex Ladies, was fifth in the 800m final in 2mins 5.58secs. Natasha Danvers did not compete in the 400m hurdles in the trials but is included in the team as the only athlete with a qualifying time.
