Carisbrooke Castle

Carisbrooke Castle
Timeline of 1,000 Years
DVD
£14.99

THE Isle of Wight's oldest and most striking fortress, Carisbrooke Castle has a rich and colourful history stretching across 1,000 years.
As early as 829AD, the Saxons had a stronghold on the site but it was William Fitz Osbern, a friend of William the Conqueror, who established a castle there.
The current stone castle, however, was begun in the reign of Henry I by Lord of the Isle Richard de Redvers to replace the original wooden structure and completed by his son, Baldwin, in 1136.
This DVD charts the trials and tribulations of this magnificent fortification, where Charles I was once imprisoned, through the ages, following its trials and tribulations through to the present, when it attracts thousands of tourists every year.

  Going South

Going South
Celebrating 40 Years of Tube Trains
on the Isle of Wight
DVD
£12.67
LONDON Underground trains operating on the Isle of Wight? Yes, it's true.
From 1967, pre-Second World War stock from the underground has carried locals and holidaymakers on the Ryde-to-Shanklin line via another seaside resort, Sandown.
This film tells the fascinating story of the Underground trains on the Isle of Wight, but also delves deeply into the early London history of the three lines from which the age-defying stock emanated: the Piccadilly; the now-defunct Northern City; and - later - the Northern.
The early beginnings of the Undergound itself - the world's first underground - is also highlighted.

Around 10,000 people took advantage of perfect walking conditions for this year's Walk The Wight, breaking previous records and enjoying a great day out amid some of the Island's more spectacular scenery.
