ISLE of Wight golfer Ryan Harmer helped Hampshire end their 21-year wait for an English County Championship title today (Sunday).
The team claimed only their second ever championship with victory over Staffordshire.
Harmer, who plays at Freshwater Bay and Shanklin and Sandown golf clubs, set Hampshire up perfectly by causing an upset in the day’s first match.
He sunk a brilliant birdie putt on the 18th to gain a one-hole win against Welsh amateur strokeplay champion Gian-Marco Petrozzi.
A 16-year-old Justin Rose was a member of the Hampshire team which last won the title in 1996.
Today he recognised Harmer’s contribution in a tweet, which said ‘county champions….at last.’
