THE weather has intervened yet again as a waterlogged speedway track led to the postponement of the Isle of Wight's Wightlink Warriors' opening meeting of the season today.

With last Saturday's practice day, which normally attracts a good-sized crowd, cancelled due to the bad weather, it is a blow to the Island's speedway promoters to see The Vince Mapley Memorial Trophy meeting called off too.

The decision was made following an inspection of the waterlogged Smallbrook Stadium track and centre green, with promoters stating the track could not be prepared safely for racing.

Disappointed co-promoter, Barry Bishop, said: "With riders and fans travelling from across the country, the early decision was made to postpone the meeting to a later date, when we hope we can schedule all of Thursday’s line up to join us and race for the title."

The Warriors' first scheduled track action is this coming weekend, when they travel to Mildenhall on Sunday, to take on the Fen Tigers in the National Trophy.

This will be followed by the visit of the Belle Vue Colts to Smallbrook Stadium on Thursday, April 12, for what promises to be a terrific first league fixture of the season.
