ISLE of Wight-born bowls player, Lucy Beere, has seen her ambition of winning gold at the Commonwealth Games end in disappointment.

Lucy, 35, who now lives in Guernsey and is represented the Channel Island at the games, lost three of her four qualifying matches in Group B of the bowls singles today.

Lucy, who recently won the Indoor Bowls World Cup in Warilla, Australia, lost 21-15 to Laura Daniels (Wales) and beat Rachel McDonald (Jersey) 21-12 on Thursday, then she lost her next two — 21-6 against Caroline Brown (Scotland) yesterday and 21-17 against Amaliah Matali (Brunei) today.

It means she missed out on a quarter final spot.

She will not be playing in any of the other bowls competitions — the pairs, triples and fours.

Lucy's dad, Tony Beere, a retired driving instructor on the Island, said: "I received a text afterwards and she said she was exhausted after five weeks of competition in Australia.

"It was always going to be tough to win a medal straight after winning the Indoor World Cup. It was a bridge too far for Lucy.

"Knowing Lucy, she won't dwell on it and she will be looking forward to her next event."
