THE biggest horse trials ever to be held on the Isle of Wight will be staged at Osborne House next week.

Island horse enthusiasts are in for a special treat with the London Capital and Finance-sponsored event on Wednesday and Thursday.

Hundreds of riders will descend on Osborne House from far and wide to take part in the compact eventing format — two days of fast-paced competition — featuring Olympic gold medallists and Island event rider Sarah Holmes, who will ride three of her horses.

This new competition will see riders take part in a short dressage test, showjumping and a thrilling cross-country finale — all within the space of five hours — before two winners are crowned at the end of each day.

The trials will star Australian four-time Olympic medallist Andrew Hoy, plus British stars William Fox Pitt and Mary King and world-renowned riders Sam Griffiths, Ludwig Svennerstal, Oliver Townend, who has 155 top three placings at international FEI events, and Izzy Taylor, who finished second in the UK rankings in 2017.

Organisers BEDE Events has also given 6,500 Island schoolchildren tickets to see the event, which falls in the school summer holidays.
