THE Isle of Wight Warriors speedway team take a break from league action this week to stage a very special fixture against the Great Britain Young Lions at Ryde's Smallbrook Stadium tomorrow (Tuesday).

Former Warriors team manager Neil Vatcher is the man now charged with the development of youth speedway in the UK and, as part of his strategic plan, he wants more team action for his protégés.

The Wightlink-backed Warriors management were quick to offer a fixture and has brought in a solid team of established National League riders, all under the age of 19.

Sixteen-year-old Birmingham sensation, Leon Flint, will lead the Young Lions — supported by Taylor Hampshire (Kent), Jason Edwards (Eastbourne) and Joe Lawlor (Belle Vue Colts), who will skipper the side.

The Warriors will have the now familiar one-to-seven on parade and, just to add a bit of spice to the occasion, the home team will be under the control of Vatcher’s wife, Jackie.

Isle of Wight speedway co-promoter Barry Bishop is expecting his side to get a rigorous workout.

Isle of Wight County Press:

“We are delighted to be able to offer the opportunity to bring together some of Great Britain’s future stars as we recognise the tremendous progress of the youth set-up under his stewardship," said Bishop.

"He has done so much to energise speedway and his way of working links so well with what we are doing here on the Island.

Isle of Wight County Press:

"This fixture also gives our fans the chance to see riders of national and international potential in competitive action and I expect a close contest, one which the Warriors can most certainly win."

The Warriors team will comprise Alfie Bowtell, Danno Verge, Scott Campos, Chris Widman, Ben Morley, Jamie Bursill and Shaun Tedham.

Isle of Wight County Press:

As usual, gates will open at 5.30pm, with open pit access between 5.45pm and 6.15pm, immediately followed by pre-meeting demonstrations ahead of the parade of riders.

Tapes up at 7pm.
