IT WAS a bad day in the FA Cup for Newport, hammered 6-0 away at Wimborne Town this afternoon (Saturday).

However, things were much brighter for the Island's two other Sydenhams Wessex sides.

Cowes Sports put last week's defeat in the Premier Division behind them to win 2-1 against Team Solent at Westwood Park.

An early John McKie penalty, after the skipper had been brought down in the box, gave them the lead.

But against the run of play, Team Solent equalised, also from the penalty spot.

Ji Nash, a second half substitute, blasted home from six yards from a superb Fin Phillips cross to restore the Yachtsmen's lead.

The win put Cowes Sports up to second place.

Just across the River Medina, East Cowes Vics beat Division 1 rivals Totton and Eling by the same 2-1 scoreline at Victoria Park.

Elias Ahmed, who was on the scoresheet against New Milton last week, put the Islanders ahead on 21 minutes, but the visitors equalised.

Vics striker Ahmed, who has had a great start to the season, bagged his second to secure back-to-back league wins, which has hoisted them up to seventh.

In the Harwoods Renault Isle of Wight League, Sandown stay top after they drew the 'Bay' derby 3-3 at Shanklin, while last season's league champions Whitecroft & Barton Sports chalked up their first victory, 3-0 away at newly-promoted Osborne Coburg.

In Division 2, the stand-out result was Bembridge's 12-2 demolition of Yarmouth & Calbourne - just four days after smashing Niton Community 8-1.

However, last season's relegated sides, Oakfield and Ryde Saints, are joint top with 100 per cent records.
