WIGHT Tri members from the Isle of Wight headed to France to take part in the gruelling Challenge Vichy Ironman, with Royal Marine Josh Abrook showing nerves of steel by proposing marriage to fellow team-mate, Laura Barton.

As is the tradition, Josh got down on one knee to pop the question as Laura (13.42.28) crossed the finish line, holding a sign with ‘Will you marry me?’ on it.

The Isle of Wight-born couple, both aged 29, live in Whippingham, near East Cowes.

Laura, a solicitor, said: “It was an emotional moment.

“Initially I felt really confused as I was so exhausted so focussed on the finish, plus Josh had always said he didn’t want to get married.

“I asked him if he was joking and, once I established he wasn’t, I said yes.”

Josh (10.38.07) was the first of the Wight Tri six to finish — 66th in the age 30 group.

Next were Steve Goodier (10.38.07), Craig Wilson (11.21.57) Joe (12.05.57) and Emma Spencer Goodier (13.44.38).
