THERE were mixed fortunes for the Island's top sides this afternoon, with a youthful-looking Newport side putting Whitchurch United to the sword in their first round Sydenhams Wessex League Cup tie.

The St George's side won 4-0, with all the goals coming after a bitty, goalless first half.

Port opened the floodgates four minutes after the restart, when Louie Fleming ran down the right wing and, when he was one on one with the keeper, he blasted it right through him.

Jared Wetherick was the next to get on the scoresheet, scoring a back-header from a corner on 58 minutes.

Within five minutes of the goal, a Newport player was upended in the box and Wetherick blasted his spot-kick in the roof of the Whitchurch net to end the tie as a contest.

Whitchurch were caught square at the back when man-of-the-match, George Holmes, cut in from the left, drifted past two defenders and slid the ball into the bottom corner from an acute angle to make it 4-0.

Even towards the end, there was drama when the referee blew for a second penalty.

As Wetherick was placing the ball on the spot with a hat-trick in mind, the linesman persuaded the ref to change his mind and give a free-kick instead.

Liam Triggs hit the free-kick well, but the Whitchurch keeper pulled off a super save to tip it wide for a corner, which eventually came to nothing.

As the game went into injury time, a Newport player managed to thunder a header against the Whitchurch bar, which was cleared to safety.

In his first game in charge, new manager Vic Sanders saw his Cowes side go down 1-0 to ten-man Portchester in the Sydenhams Wessex Premier League.

The home side scored the winner with 11 minutes to go.

East Cowes Vics lost by same score in the second qualifying round of the FA Vase away at Totton & Eling.
