HOW did the Ventnor wall lizard cross the road?
With a little help from a series of tubes installed by Island Roads.
Recent repairs to The Terraces have included installing a series of small tubes to ensure its colony of wall lizards can continue to live there.
The non-native wall lizards arrived on the Island from the Mediterranean, however, they are not protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981.
Island Roads is responsible for repairing and upgrading various retaining walls across the Isle of Wight, and it works with environmental groups to install habitats for creatures living in the structures.
So far, the company has installed bee tubes at several locations as well as an 'eelevator' at Holbrooke's Bridge, at Bouldnor, near Yarmouth, to help migrating eels travel up a refurbished watercourse.
