THE latest in a string of outdoor fires has prompted the Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service to urge people to take extra care with fires during this hot, dry weather.

A large fire in the open broke out off Alverstone Road this afternoon, with emergency services being alerted just after 2pm.

Crews from Shanklin and Ryde were called to the scene, alongside two water carriers, ferrying water back and forth for the pumps.

A fire and rescue service spokeswoman said the fire measured 25 metres across.

After the fire, the Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue service said on Twitter: "The IWFRS have seen a dramatic increase in fires in the open caused by unattended bonfires and carelessly discarded cigarettes.

"Please be extra vigilant and careful during this hot, dry spell.

"Where the vegetation is so dry a small fire can quickly get out of control."
