FIREFIGHTERS from Newport were called out to tackle two fires in Parkhurst Forest yesterday evening (Monday).

The two small fires were reported at 8.30pm and were tackled with spades and water by emergency crews.

On Sunday (July 8) the Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service warned lives were being put at risk by arsonists deliberately starting fires in and around Parkhurst Forest.

Five fires have now been tackled by the fire service in the forest and surrounding areas in just over a week.

In Ventnor, at 12.43am today (Tuesday) firefighters were also called to a fire on a balcony that had spread to a wooden bench and fence.

However, it had been put out by the time emergency crews arrived
