CALLS for a zebra crossing in Wootton have intensified following a fatal accident in the spot campaigners have long identified as a dangerous one.

There have been two accidents in recent weeks by The Sloop Inn — one of which was serious enough to warrant the air ambulance and led to the death of Jacqueline Valvona.

Mike Waddleton, of New Road, is leading the campaign for a zebra crossing on Kite Hill, backed by other locals, who have got a petition going.

Wootton Parish Council first approached the Isle of Wight Council in 2014 on the same issue.

Mike said: "We have been campaigning for several years to get a simple zebra pedestrian crossing at Wootton Bridge by the Sloop.

"It is the only pedestrian route into Fishbourne, the crossing for the round the Island cycle path, the crossing for the coastal path and the only way to get from lower Wootton Bridge to the number nine bus to Newport.

"So far we have achieved getting it on to the Network Integrity Register but with no priority, despite a petition."

The Isle of Wight Council confirmed the zebra crossing was on the register and will be considered in due course.
