COULD Ken Elsey be the oldest scooter rider in town?

The 73-year-old, who lives in a houseboat at Blackhouse Quay, Newport, swapped his bike for a scooter and hasn't looked back.

He balances his shopping on the handlebars — four pints of milk on one side and a carrier bag on the other — and once scooted all the way to Lake.

A retired Isle of Wight engineer, Ken said: "I was an active cyclist but had so many punctures, so I bought a kick scooter. I do get some funny looks but it goes over my head.

"I used to really like the one I had as a kid, although it's much harder work now. It's quite a lot of exercise. I can't boast a healthy diet — lots of buns and ice creams — but my mind is young and I'm as active as a person half my age.

"You have to use it or lose it!"
