THE Isle of Wight’s leading female runner, in-form Charlie Metcalfe, showed why she deserved to wear the England jersey by coming first in her age group and sixth-fastest woman in the Chester Marathon.

The 41 year old from Lake was among a field of over 5,000 runners.

She completed the run in a personal best 2.53.20 at the event, which incorporated the England Age Group Championships.

In the W40 category, running for England against the other home nations, she won, was 113th overall and helped England win the team prize.

The Ryde Harrier, who runs 70 miles a week as part of her training regime, was delighted with her performance.

“I wanted to get under three hours. At the 18-mile mark, I knew I was on for 2hrs 53mins and was not going to let things slip. I was determined to get there and I was very pleased with the time.

“I feel so proud to have run for England.

Her coach, Geoff Watkin, said: “What a fantastic result. Charlie is not only naturally very strong and fit, she is mentally really tough. This was her best performance yet, without doubt.”

Fellow Ryde Harrier, Andrew McEvan, also ran a PB 2.55.57 in the M55 group, coming an excellent second in England colours, with England also winning in his team age group.
