ROWING with security staff at Newport's Co-op store landed a Shalfleet man in court.

Simon Flux, 36, of St Swithins Crescent, admitted one offence of assault when he appeared before Island magistrates on Tuesday.

The court heard a security guard saw Flux enter the store and was aware he had been placed on 'Shopwatch.'

He watched Flux select a can of beer before another man outside the door gave him some cash.

The security guard asked Flux to leave the store and to put the can of beer down but Flux threatened the guard saying he was gong to kill him and hit him round the head with a piece of wood, said Vivian Ducie prosecuting.

Flux then pushed the guard, causing him to fall backwards and knock over a shelf. As Flux was removed from the store, he tried to trip staff, added Mr Ducie.

For Flux, Oscar Vincent said his client had gone into the store to buy the beer but when he got inside, realised he did not have any money.

He had gone to get the money from his uncle and cousin who were outside.

He had then returned to pay but remembered a member of staff snatching the beer from him declaring he was barred from the store.

Flux remembered being told by staff he was not leaving by the entrance near Newport Bus Station but was instead told to leave from the Pyle Street entrance.

He then acknowledged there had been a struggle, causing the member of staff to fall.

He did not remember trying to trip staff but had since seen the incident on CCTV.

Mr Vincent said Flux had attended the police station voluntarily following the incident.

Magistrates gave Flux a conditional discharge for the offence and told him to pay costs of £85 and a surcharge of £20.
