CRASHING a campervan into a car park wall then panicking and driving the vehicle away while drunk landed a Ryde man in court this morning (Friday).

Kenneth Jenkins, 31, of East Ashey Lane, had spent a night out drinking with a friend in Newport when they decided to go back to his campervan in Lugley Street car park to charge his friend's phone, Isle of Wight Magistrates' Court heard.

In order to charge the phone, Jenkins had to turn the key in the ignition, but the vehicle had been left in gear and launched forward, crashing into a wall, the court heard.

Panicking, Jenkins drove the car out of the car park, but police were called by a member of Island Roads staff, who had witnessed the crash on CCTV, prosecutor Vivian Ducie told the court.

Police caught Jenkins driving the van up Hunnyhill, with his lights out and a flat rear tyre.

In court this morning, Jenkins, a chef, pleaded guilty to drink driving.

For Jenkins, Henry Farley said his client was "distressed at his own stupidity" and "full of shame".

"This incident stands alone and is not representative of who Mr Jenkins is," Mr Farley said.

Magistrates fined him £200 and banned him from driving for 30 months. He will also have to pay a £30 surcharge and £85 court costs.
