MULTIPLE crews of firefighters were called out to Newchurch this morning (Sunday) to tackle a house fire.

Smoke was seen issuing from the roof of the house on Newchurch high street and flames were seen in the upstairs of the property.

Two crews from Newport were called out alongside the fire station's aerial ladder platform, as well as one crew from Shanklin and one from Ryde. A command support unit was also in attendance.

Emergency services received the call just before 10am.

UPDATE 12:45

A spokesperson for the fire and rescue service said operations were scaling back as the fire is brought under control.

The fire, which began in the upper floor and roof space of a single terraced house, spread to adjoining properties.

Firefighters tackled the blaze from above with an aerial ladder platform.

As the operation scaled down, firefighters were checking for hot spots and cutting back and removing roof tiles in order to make the building safe.

The spokesperson said that three crews of firefighters were taken over to the Isle of Wight from the mainland and positioned at Newport and Ryde to provide fire cover while the Island's resources were tied up at the Newchurch fire.

The spokesperson confirmed that no injuries had been reported and all occupants of the houses affected were accounted for.
