IN A remarkable past six years, Isle of Wight talent Amelie Haworth has been on an incredible sporting journey — from learning to play squash as a beginner, to winning major tournaments, including the British Championships last weekend.

The 12 year old, of Godshill, won the event in Nottingham without so much as dropping a single game.

After getting a bye in the first round, Amelie eased through the tournament to reach the semi-final, where she had to really step up and show top form.

She did not disappoint — winning in straight games, 11-2, 11-4, 11-4.

Amelie was up against a tough opponent in the final — Meha Shah, from Warwickshire.

Amelie got off to a nervy start, but produced quality squash at just the right times to take the first game 11-7.

As her nerves began to fade, Amelie powered through the second game, winning it comfortably, 11-1

In the third, it got a lot closer, but Amelie showed great determination to overcome the challenge of Shah and take the championship with an 11-9 win.

Amelie’s coach, the Island’s number one squash player, Adam Dominey, said: “To win the British Championships without dropping a single game shows how much talent and ability Amelie has — and can produce.

“In six years, she’s gone from beginner to winning the British Championships. If you’re dedicated enough, you can achieve your dreams.”
