AN ISLE of Wight man has surfed his way onto the shortlist for The Wave Project's volunteer of the year.

Ian Butler, 44, of Sandown, volunteers at the project to support children and young adults to surf with one-to-one assistance of volunteers — all overseen by surf guru, Mannie from iSurf.

The aim of the project is to teach surfing in a way young people find fun and supportive.

Ian said: "I lost my dad at the age of five, and I found that playing rugby enabled me to build confidence and several life skills that made me who I am today.

"Volunteering at the Wave Project allows me to support people to be the best version of themselves, removing barriers and building resilience.

"On a personal level, volunteering significantly improves my mental wellbeing, though more importantly, it's great fun."

Abbie James, project coordinator for the Isle of Wight Wave Project, said: "I nominated Ian for the award because not only has he given a lot of his time to volunteering for the project, he's gone above and beyond to raise money and awareness.

"He cycled round the Island, swam Lake Windermere to raise awareness, is always helping at events and has helped keep the project sustainable by training as a lifeguard.

"He's always encouraging, positive, enthusiastic and is a huge asset to our team of wonderful volunteers."

Ian said the reason he volunteers for the project is to support and improve lives by enhancing physical and mental wellbeing and increasing social connections.

"I was truly surprised to be shortlisted for volunteer of the year and to be invited to the awards dinner in Newquay. I can't thank my wife enough for talking me into getting involved with her at the Wave Project."
