FIREWORKS night came early when the Isle of Wight hosted some spectacular displays over the weekend.

There is still time to watch a display tonight, with Yarmouth and Ventnor geared up to welcome the crowds.

On Saturday, an estimated 5,000 people enjoyed the Sandown Fun Day and fireworks off the pier, organised by Sandown Carnival Association, supported by Sandown Pier and Sandown Town Council.

Part of the Ryde Extreme Performers' fire show had to be curtailed due to high winds, but the fireworks still went ahead and were enjoyed by crowds which packed the Esplanade.

There was other entertainment in the form of vintage amusements, wandering characters, and live music.

A healthy bucket collection was warmly received by Sandown Carnival Association. Organiser Ben Holbrook said: "The bucket collection was slightly up on last year and it goes to show that people enjoyed the evening. The feedback was very positive and people were saying it was a fantastic event.

"We are looking for more helpers so it would be great to see some new faces at our AGM in January."
