A SPECTACULAR display of fireworks lit up the sky over Yarmouth last night (Monday) as thousands flocked to the town to enjoy the annual event.

An estimated 6,000 people crammed into The Square for the Guy competition before the FaT Samba Band led a torchlight parade up the High Street to The Common.

Mayor of Yarmouth, Steve Cowley, who also judged the Guys, helped light the beacon before the fireworks were set off from a barge on The Solent.

Carnival Committee chairman, Chris Waddington, who organised the display, said: "What an evening. The town was packed, the fireworks were amazing and I think we put Yarmouth on the map.

"River Road car park, the parking overflow and The Green were heaving with cars, so that shows how many people came to see the display.

"Pains Fireworks pulled out all the stops for us and the display was simply wonderful. And the torchlight parade was an amazing sight as it weaved its way out of town.

"The success is down to all the volunteers who help us with their collecting buckets to pay for the display, parking and marshalling, but we are always looking for more people on the night to give us a hand."

Master of Ceremonies in The Square was Anthony Davies.
