LIFEBOAT crews from Bembridge were called to assist a vessel in trouble yesterday evening (Thursday).

Bembridge RNLI's all-weather lifeboat was tasked to help the 15-metre sailing yacht ten miles off Bembridge.

The yacht had six crew on board, one with a broken wrist, and the engine was not working and there was only limited steering.

The lifeboat reached the yacht by 9.10pm and initially prepared to tow the vessel to Bembridge. However, the state of the tide and swell meant Portsmouth was the more sensible destination.

The crew reached Gosport Marina at around 1am where they were met by the Hillhead Coastguard team and an ambulance. The team from Bembridge RNLI Lifeboat Station had returned to Bembridge by 5am.
