A MOVING Festival of Remembrance was staged by the Shanklin branch of the Royal British Legion at the town's theatre this evening (Friday) to remember the dead of both world wars of the last century and other conflicts before and since.

Guests at the event which was also attended by veterans and their families included the Isle of Wight's MP, Bob Seely and the Lord Lieutenant of the Isle of Wight, Maj Gen Sir Martin White.

This year's event marked the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War and also the centenary of the founding of the RAF.

And one of the highlights of this year's show was a stunning display by youngsters from the 1024 Squadron Air Training Corps who gave a superbly co-ordinated marching show. Also giving a display this year were members of the Ryde Sea Cadets who showed how guns were fired in Nelson's navy.

There were tributes to the RAF and to pilot, Mary Ellis, who helped deliver aircraft during the Second World War and died in July this year aged 101.

Music was provided by Shanklin Town Brass Band as well as Dr Kieran Cooney who played bagpipes and songs from Janet Jones who got feet tapping with some wartime favourites.

The drumhead service was conducted by the Rev Tony Richards with Mitch Jones, formerly of the Welsh Guards, playing Last Post and Reveille.

The Exhortation and the Kohima Epitaph were read by the Rev Richards. All profits from the event will go to the Poppy Appeal.
