FIREFIGHTERS across the Isle of Wight are mourning the loss of well-known Island firefighter, Trevor Moyce, who lost his battle with motor neurone disease (MND) yesterday (Tuesday).

Mr Moyce spent 30 years in the fire service, working his way up to Newport station manager, and just months after he retired in 2016, he received the shock diagnosis of MND.

MND is a rare degenerative disease that affects as little as two in 100,000 people and has no cure.

Since then, many fundraisers have been held to raise money for the devastating disease and for conversions to his home as his condition deteriorated.

These fundraising efforts were always well supported by firefighters Island-wide.

Fire stations across the Isle of Wight have paid tribute to the dedicated and popular firefighter.

East Cowes fire station said: "We have received the sad news that former station manager Trevor Moyce passed away yesterday after a long battle with MND.

"He was a lovely man and will be missed by us all. Our thoughts are with Louise and their children. R.I.P. Trevor."

Freshwater fire station said: "It’s with terrible sadness we have just heard that our former colleague Trevor Moyce passed away. Our thoughts and our prayers are with Trevor’s family at this very sad time."
