A YOUNG East Cowes man has been sent to a youth detention centre for four months after breaching a suspended sentence.

Ben Cooney, 20, of East Cowes Road, was sentenced to six months youth detention, suspended for two years, after being convicted of one charge of aggravated vehicle taking and five counts of criminal damage in October last year.

He was also ordered to complete 140 hours of unpaid work and attend 35 rehabilitation activity days.

On May 1 this year, he was ordered to complete a further ten hours of unpaid work after breaching the order.

However, the court was told although he had completed most of the unpaid work requirements, he had only completed three rehabilitation days.

Speaking on behalf of the probation service, Rod Blain, said Cooney had 'completely disengaged' from the service.

He said: "Probation can't recommend the order continues."

For Cooney, Oscar Vincent said his client was a vulnerable young man with learning difficulties and on the autistic spectrum.

He added he had found himself homeless and sleeping rough at the time of the breaches.

Judge David Melville said Cooney had failed to do the rehabilitation activities which were designed to keep him out of trouble.
