THE children of Carisbrooke CE Primary School have been taking part in a variety of activities to commemorate the end of the First World War.

The whole school has been finding out about the 47 soldiers from Carisbrooke who died during the war and who are commemorated on the war memorial at St Mary’s Church.

The children then wrote messages to the soldiers on the back of poppies which are now decorating the tree in their First World War memorial area.

In this area, they have planted bulbs, provided by the Rotary Club, which will ensure the soldiers will be remembered long after Remembrance Sunday.

Forty seven crosses representing each soldier who died have also been placed here.

In addition, children have been looking at First World War poetry and writing poems of their own.

Years 4, 5 and 6 have also taken part in Armistice workshops run by the Heritage Education Service at Carisbrooke Castle.

Lloyd Watkins, head of school, said: “It has been a thought provoking couple of weeks.

“The depth of understanding and compassion the children have demonstrated in lessons and in their messages has been amazing and extremely touching.”
