IT HAS been a whirlwind start to the new race season for specialist Isle of Wight skeleton athlete Kim Murray, who followed up her selection for the Great Britain team with superb performances in her first two Europa Cup events this weekend.

In the Austrian resort of Innsbruck, Kim finished finished fourth in her opening race and bettered it with a silver medal finish in the second.

The 30-year-old, selected to join the GB World Cup skeleton team three weeks ago, was delighted with how her races went in Innsbruck.

She said: "I’m really pleased with the result. After a fourth in the first race, I was confident I could produce a better result in the second, so to deliver on that is very positive.

"I’m looking forward to moving onto Winterberg in Germany, then making my World Cup debut in Sigulda, in Latvia, in the coming weeks.

"As a team, we’ve had a fantastic week and I’m very happy I’ve been able to contribute to that success."

In her first race, Kim was just one tenth of a second off a third placed finish, posting a total time of 1min 49.21secs combined for her two runs.

The Islander improved to the runner-up spot in her second race, but a slower combined time of 1.49.73 — a second behind the winner of both races, GB team-mate Maddy Smith.

The competition returns after the festive break with four straight European races on successive weekends in January before concluding with a race apiece in America and Canada in February.

The showpiece event of the season, the World Championships, takes place in Whistler, Canada, in early March.
