MEMBERS of St Mary's Church, Cowes, came up with a creative way to raise funds for their new church roof.

From March, through Easter and over Cowes Week, the team sold squares for people to colour in which would ultimately end up on a piece of artwork.

Brian Buckett, of the art and craft group at the church, drew the original design on canvas and divided it into squares and when finished, three lucky squares will be drawn in a prize draw.

The owners of those squares will win £25, £15 or £10.

Heather Cobb, member of the church, said: "Many people said that if they won, they would donate it back to the church roof fund so it's already a great success.

"We've raised more than £600 for the roof through the project. During Cowes Week, I met some lovely people from all over the country as they sat and coloured in.

"Some squares went as far as America and back again. It's been a marathon effort, selling them and then sticking them on the canvas but the result is fabulous."

When finished, the artwork will be varnished and framed then dedicated in church to use as an alter front. The team are hoping to be finished by Sunday, November 25.
