THE story of the First World War, including the achievements of the famous Isle of Wight horse Warrior, has been brought to Brighstone Primary School children.

Teachers, parents and pupils took part in the two-week exercise which was celebrated with a commemoration service led by Rev Linda Porter and the Royal British Legion, during which the children sang We Will Remember and Make Me a Channel of Your Peace.

The children also laid their hand-made class wreaths, doves and reflection pebbles.

Rebecca Lennon, assistant head teacher and Year 3 teacher, said: "The whole school took part in the project over a two-week period.

"Various year groups learned about how people lived at that time, their houses and homes, the war itself and how it was caused, and the animals who helped our troops including the Island's own Warrior.

"We had a First World War day where the children and teachers dressed up as soldiers, nurses and children of that time with a school schedule which included reading, writing and arithmetic, learning a poem and a PE lesson with drills.

"The older and younger pupils were grouped in their house teams and in the afternoon parents were invited to help their children each sew a dove.

"All of these doves will now be put together to create a banner to symbolise peace.

"The children all learnt a lot from the topic, which then lead to a deeper understanding of why we remember those who lost their lives."
