A BID to re-scrutinise the Isle of Wight Council’s decision to axe a community co-ordinator service has failed.

Member for Ryde East, Cllr Michael Lilley, attempted to call the decision back for further debate.

Cllr Lilley claimed there was not enough evidence to make an objective decision over the plans to cut the Local Area Co-ordinators.

He added the cabinet did not take into account the comments of the scrutiny committee, which recommended the council retained the service.

However, the monitoring officer for the Isle of Wight Council said: “I do not consider this matter can be called-in as it has been the subject of an item on the scrutiny committee, observations were made to the cabinet and I am satisfied it is demonstrated these were taken into account when making the decision.

“The decision can therefore be implemented.”

There is no appeal process for the decision.

Cllr Lilley said: “I believe this is a social injustice and a failed opportunity to get to the truth. I apologise to Island residents for failing in getting this wrong decision back into scrutiny.”

More than 45 people walked out of a cabinet meeting earlier this month after the decision was made to axe the service.
