A MAN who had two mobility scooters stolen from his address in Sandown over the weekend was pleased to receive a call from firefighters today who had recovered one of the machines.

Firefighters SM Fountaine and WM Cook of Sandown Fire Station recovered the larger of the two scooters that had been dumped in a stream behind Sandown Bowls Club, near Sandham Gardens.

On Monday, a picture of the scooter was posted in a lost and found group on Facebook.

Yesterday (Tuesday), the second scooter was seen in a park off Lake Hill — the road between Sandown and Lake — and posted on the same group.

A spokesperson for the Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service said: "Sometime over the weekend, two mobility scooters were stolen from an address in Sandown leaving the owner unable to get out and about.

"One of these was abandoned in a river. This was recovered by SM Fountaine and WM Cook of Sandown Fire Station and returned to a grateful owner today."
