SLAPPING a teenager on the cheek, then biting her mother and a police officer landed a Newport woman in court.

Nina Hoskins, 33, of St James Street, admitted assault occasioning actual bodily harm, assaulting a constable and failing to surrender when she appeared before the Isle of Wight Crown Court today (Friday).

She also admitted three offences of theft.

The court heard police were called to The Hideaway Cafe in Shanklin on September 9 about an unrelated matter.

As people in the cafe waited to speak to officers, Hoskins struck the teenager's cheek, causing her to stumble.

The teenager's mother took hold of Hoskins so she could not get away from police and the two fell to the ground.

She was bitten on the neck by Hoskins in the struggle.

A police officer who tried to restrain Hoskins was also bitten on the hand.

The theft offences all related to incidents of shoplifting, the court heard.

For Hoskins, Adam Norris said his client was thoroughly ashamed of herself.

He said: "She is enormously sorry and disgusted with herself."

She was sentenced to an 18 month community order with 40 days of rehabilitation activities and told to pay a surcharge.
