A WOMAN charged with burning down two hotels in Sandown in September appeared before Isle of Wight magistrates this morning (Monday).

Paula Skelly, 62, of Britain Street, Portsea, did not enter a plea at the initial hearing, held at the Isle of Wight Magistrates' Court.

She was charged with arson after allegedly flicking a cigarette end from a balcony, which landed in a pile of rubbish and started the fire.

The fire spread and destroyed both the Tarvic 2 and St Moritz Hotels at Culver Parade.

An arrest warrant was issued on Friday after Miss Skelly failed to appear in court.

The court heard today the letter summoning to appear had been sent to an old address.

The case has been adjourned to the Isle of Wight Crown Court on January 28.
