PUPILS at a Freshwater primary school have been getting in the festive spirit by making christingles.

All Saints CE Primary School students have been learning christingle songs and the children from Darling Class made christingles for a service led by Reverend Leisa (McGovern) Potter.

The Christingle dates back to 1747 when a German bishop wanted a simple way to explain children about Jesus.

The orange represents the world, and the red ribbon God's love wrapped around the world. Dried fruit and sweets represent the four seasons, and the candle in the middle symbolises Jesus as the light of the world.

In 1968, Christingle was brought to this country by The Children’s Society, a charity that supports vulnerable children.

There was a collection at the end of the All Saints service for The Children’s Society.
