WALKING football was introduced to children at St George's School in Newport.

The Caulkhead Strollers Pan Disability Football Club organised a FA coaching course and football training for the students, who have severe and complex needs.

More than 30 students expressed an interest in playing and spent six weeks doing a range of walking and traditional football with experienced FA coaches Mark Powell and Paul Daysh, who both coach at Brading Town Youth FC.

They gave their time for free and insisted their coach fees were donated to their club.

Parents and carers were invited in during the final week, to see what the students had been up to, how they had developed their skills and expertise.

It also gave them a chance to meet Dave Duffy from the Caulkhead Strollers and the coaches, should the students wish to attend any community-based clubs.

A spokesperson from St Georges said it had been a new and exciting opportunity for students to develop their skills.

"This has been a great opportunity for the students and the school to get involved in promoting local sports clubs.

"We are always looking for different opportunities for our students to be active both in and out of school time so they can find groups and activities to be part of and live active healthy lives within their local community."

The coaches added: "The young people have been fantastic to work with. Their enthusiasm and support of each other are a credit to their school and themselves. We hope they continue with a love for sport and football."
