The Isle of Wight MP has said he is not surprised the Prime Minister defeated a snap vote of confidence in her leadership, held in Westminster tonight.

Conservative MP Bob Seely said: "For once, I called it correctly."

Earlier today Mr Seely announced his support for the Prime Minister ahead of this evening's vote.

The vote was defeated by 200 votes in favour of Mrs May to 117.

Speaking to the County Press after the vote, Mr Seely said he hopes the party can now get on delivering Brexit.

He said: "We now have got to get on with it.

"We have got to get on delivering Brexit in the best way we can both for the people of Britain and the people of the Isle of Wight."

He added that it was disappointing a third of his Conservative colleagues had chosen to vote against Mrs May.

However, Mr Seely said he believed Mrs May's deal could deliver Brexit: "So long as she gets more reassurance on the Irish backstop issue."

A vote of no confidence in Theresa May's leadership was called after the required 48 letters calling for a contest were delivered to Chairman of the 1922 Committee, Sir Graham Brady.
