IT IS a well-known Shanklin store, but did you know that Beardsalls also has a printing outlet in Newport?

Beardsalls has had printing running through its DNA since 1901, when John Beardsall started a photographic studio on Chine Hill in Shanklin, taking and selling memories of Victorian seaside holidays.

His son Bernard continued his father's efforts and developed the business, introducing book selling and a lending library. In 1950 Bernard encouraged one of his three sons, Paul, to take a five-year apprenticeship at Lightbownes, which was a well-respected Island printer, with the intention of adding print to his list of services.

Tragically Bernard died before he could fulfil his dream, Paul was called up to National Service, and his younger brother Michael was charged with running the business with his mother.

From the tender age of 16, Michael and latterly with his wife Iris successfully developed the retail side, offering quick print photocopying services and adopting new digital colour presses in the mid 1990s.

Since then their son Toby has kept up with technology and now runs an advanced digital press and finishing system.

Having moved to new premises in Orchard Street, Newport, this March, the business has taken on a large format press, and the team of designers and operators now offer all types of printing services from the smallest business cards to flyers, booklets, banners and vehicle wraps.

Toby said: "Quick turnaround times, professional advice and an understanding of the clients needs are still at the forefront of Beardsalls' ongoing success."
