A NEWPORT man pleaded guilty to making 65 indecent photographs of a child and possessing two prohibited images of a child when he appeared before Isle of Wight magistrates today (Tuesday).

Daniel James Pitman, 37, of Winston Road, was caught by police after he downloaded 18 Category A — the most offensive — indecent images of children

Officers also found 30 Category B and 17 Category C indecent images of children, they also found two prohibited images of a child on Pitman's electronic devices.

Prosecuting, Ann Smout, said police acted on intelligence illegal images had been downloaded at Pitman's address.

When they attended, Pitman said he was 'confused' about the images he had downloaded and said they were not what he was looking for.

On analysis of his computer, it was discovered he had been using certain search terms to find illicit images of minors.

Mrs Smout said: "We have some very, very unpleasant images and looking at the nature of these the starting point for sentencing is one year [in custody]."

For Pitman, Barry Arnett said: "He was, prior to today, a man of good character. He has lost that good character."

Pitman was granted unconditional bail and will be sentenced at Isle of Wight Crown Court on February 15.
