MULTIPLE crews of firefighters were called out to an alert at GKN in the early hours of this morning (Friday).

Firefighters from East Cowes, Newport and Ryde all responded to reports of smoke in a compressor room at the East Cowes factory.

A crew from East Cowes, two from Newport, an aerial ladder platform and a crew from Ryde were all called out just after 3am.

However, upon inspection, it was discovered that the smoke was due to a system failure, possibly arising from a worn belt.

The unit was isolated and firefighters were stood down.

The last crew left the scene just after 4am.
